1st and 2nd Grade: August Composer of the Month

This week we are finishing up our Composer of the Month study of Johann Sebastian Bach or as we like to call him in class, Mr. Bach. The students have learned several facts about him and would love to share them with you. Questions to ask your students about him include:
  • What country is he from?
  • What instrument was he very good at playing?
  • What virtue did he show?
  • How many children did he have?
  • What is the name of one of the pieces he wrote that we listened to in class?
We were able to listen to:

Minuet in G

Kindergarten Music Update

School has been off to a great start. We are already learning so much in music class.

In Kindergarten we have been:
  • Learning how to use our four voices: Singing, Speaking, Whisper and Thinking
  • Discovering Mystery Instruments: Ukulele, piano, djembe and tubano drums
  • Singing and moving to music that is fast and slow, and high and low
Our favourite song to listen to this month is the Hungarian Dance by Johannes Brahms. The students have been practicing how to move fast and slow in response to the music.
You can listen to the piece here:     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X9LvC9WkkQ
Your students will love showing you how they move fast and slow to the music.

Welcome to K-2 Music!

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Hello! My name is Rachel Boswell and I am the General Music Teacher for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade. I am a native of Rochester, NY and a graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College where I completed a B.S. in Music Education. This will be my second year teaching at Archway Lincoln. A few of my hobbies are singing, playing guitar, reading, hiking and bragging excessively about my one year old niece.

I am looking forward to welcoming back our young scholars and meeting the new additions to our great school. In music class, students will explore and navigate the wonderful world of music! These early years are an essential time in your student’s development to introduce foundational musical concepts. They will serve as the basis of their understanding of music for years to come. My goal is to engage the students in singing, playing, listening, creating, performing and responding to music.

We will cover:
Music Theory  (solfege, melody, rhythm, notation, form, articulation)
Singing  (finding our voice, posture, breathing, volume control, song memorization)
Playing  (technique for a variety of instruments, pitched and unpitched)
Music History  (composer’s lives and works)
Listening  (getting familiar with beautiful pieces of music and describing what we hear)
Moving  (responding kinesthetically to the music we hear)

Performing is also an essential part of being a musician. Each grade level will have the opportunity to put on a concert for family and friends twice a year. The concerts are mandatory and part of their grade. The concert dates are:

Thursday, November 17th from 5:30- 6:30pm
and
Thursday, April 27th from 5:30-6:30pm
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or comments.
I look forward to our correspondence and a wonderful year ahead.

Sincerely,

Rachel Boswell
