New Music Monday, Welcome September, and Fall Concert Update
September is here and we have a new composer this month!
1st and 2nd have been learning about Mr. Bach. He is one of the most influential composers of all time and has written over 1000 compositions.
We started last week with the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
The students have loved learning about the organ and I'm sure they have told you about Organ Stop Pizza. 😃 Some of my students told me about it last year and have really enjoyed seeing an organ in real life. This week we are learning about Minuets and listening to another famous Bach piece, Minuet in G.
****Edit*****
Some students from 2D were asking questions about Bach's 20 kids that I could not answer at the time. I did some research and found a link that had some information about them. A few of them even became renowned composers just like their father.
*************
Students are also taking beginning steps towards reading music. Both grade levels can read Sol/Mi melodies as well as rhythms with quarter and eighth notes.
Kindergarten has been learning about Lullabys and how there is different music for different things. We have heard a song to shake out our sillies, a song to help us wake up and now lullabys to put us to sleep. You may have also heard some "bubble language" from your students. Bubble language comes from a poem and is preparation for "rhythm language" which introduces "ta"and "ti-ti".
All the grade levels have begun preparing for the Fall Concert. Here are a few details to keep in mind:

Wrapping Up August
Greetings from Music Class!
This week in Kindergarten we have been exploring music that is high and low.
We are able to sing, speak and move high and low when we hear the music change.
We practiced this with "Teasing Song". Students are able to move high, middle and low as the music changes.
Our favorite activity this week was playing Ballerinas and Soldiers.
The students march like soldiers when the music is low and twirl like ballerinas when the music is high.
1st and 2nd graders are finishing up their study of Mr. Vivaldi. They should be able to tell you 5 facts about him and which season was their favorite to listen to.
This week, we ended with "Spring" and showed the story from the poem with scarves.
The students got to be happy people, birds, the murmuring stream or the thunder and lightening.

Springtime is upon us.
The birds celebrate her return with festive song,
and murmuring streams are softly caressed by the breezes.
Thunderstorms, those heralds of Spring, roar, casting their
dark mantle over heaven,
Then they die away to silence, and the birds
take up their charming songs once more.
Happy Listening!

Week 3
Kindergartners have been learning about high and low sounds with the help of Oliver the owl and the piano. They are learning to move up and down when the music goes high or low.
1st and 2nd graders listened to "Winter" this week. They loved moving in different ways to show the short and choppy parts of the music and contrasting it with the parts played by the solo violin.
"Winter"
Below is a short video that gives a bit of background on Antonio Vivaldi and The Four Seasons.
Why Should You Listen to Vivaldi's Four Seasons?

And We're Off!
The new school year is already off to a great start.
This week the students have been getting used to being in their new music room and learning what to do when they get there. We have been practicing our procedures, cues and warming up our singing voices.
Our Kinder and 1st grade students have met Oliver the Owl. Oliver helps us find our singing voice when we have lost it. He also loves to be in charge and the students enjoy watching him conduct.
This Week's Listening
Last year, students were very excited about the music we listened to in class. Many times, I would forget to post the links on my blog. I am making a conscious effort to be more consistent with that this year so that the students can share what they are learning with you. 😊 Here is what we have been listening to this week:
Kinder- selections from Peer Gynt By Edvard Grieg.
"Morning"
"In the Hall of the Mountain King"
1st and 2nd have a new composer every month.
August's Composer of the Month is Mr. Vivaldi.
By the end of the week, they should have listened to two selections from
The Four Seasons.
"Summer"
"Autumn"
I look forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night.

Welcome to Music Class!
Hello! My
name is Rachel Boswell and I am the General Music Teacher for Kindergarten, 1st
and 2nd grade. I am a native of Rochester, NY and a graduate of Roberts
Wesleyan College where I completed a B.S. in Music Education. As I am a member
of the Founding Faculty, this will be my third year teaching at Archway
Lincoln. A few of my hobbies are singing, playing guitar, reading, hiking and
bragging excessively about my two year old niece.
I am looking
forward to welcoming back our young scholars and meeting the new additions to
our great school. In music class, students will explore and navigate the
wonderful world of music! These early years are an essential time in your
student’s development to introduce foundational musical concepts. They will
serve as the basis of their understanding of music for years to come. My goal
is to engage the students in singing, playing, listening, creating, performing
and responding to music.
We will
cover:
•
Music Theory - solfege, melody, rhythm, notation, form,
articulation
•
Singing - finding our singing voice, posture, breathing, volume control, song memorization
•
Playing - technique for a variety of instruments, pitched and unpitched
•
Music History - composer’s lives and works
•
Listening - getting familiar with beautiful pieces of
music and describing what we hear
•
Moving - responding kinesthetically to the music we hear
• Performing - an essential part of being
a musician. Each grade level will have the opportunity to put on a concert for
family and friends twice a year. The concerts are mandatory and part of their
grade. The concert dates are:
Thursday,
November 16th from 5:30- 6:15pm
and
Thursday,
April 5th from 5:30-6:15pm
We will be
performing at the Higley Center for the Performing Arts.
Please do
not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or comments.
I look
forward to our correspondence and a wonderful year ahead.
Sincerely,
Rachel
Boswell

Congratulations!!
Congratulations on a fantastic Spring Concert!
We had so much fun celebrating our Wonderful World.
I am so proud of all the students. Their hard work and perseverance paid off!
The students are truly learning how to go from strength to strength in their performances. Thank you for your patience as we had to work out some technical difficulties right as the doors were supposed to open. Your students are truly blessed to have such supportive and encouraging families.

Second Grade: You Are My Sunshine
You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You’ll never know, dear
How much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away
2A
The other night, dear
As I was thinking
I saw you making
Me lots of food
When I was hungry, you gave me dinner
Then you gave me lots of dessert
2B
The other night, dear
When I was looking
Through our albums
I saw your face
And when I saw you
I was so happy
So I hugged you very tight
2C
The other night dear,
As I was sleeping,
I dreamt I held you in my arms
And when I woke up
You were still with me
So I sang this happy song

2nd Grade MC parts
This week I introduced the MC parts to 2nd Grade.
Here are the parts so that the students can practice.
#1
Our
exploration of the wonderful world around us continues. In second grade we will
be singing about the vast and beautiful SKY! Imagine with me, if you
will, the early morning. Can you see the sunrise? Can you see the golden colors
slowly fill the sky? Our first
selection is a celebration of this beautiful morning and a new day.
#2
That is such
a great song to sing when you wake up feeling happy and excited about a new
day. But we all know that there are many days when you wake up on the wrong
side of the bed. Those days can feel rainy and gloomy. Good thing the rain doesn’t last forever. This song is a
reminder that after the rain is gone, sometimes you can see a rainbow in the
sky. Special thanks to the 6th graders for playing the recorder with
us as we sing.
#3
Rain doesn’t
always have to make a day gloomy and sad. Sometimes, if it’s not raining too hard, it can be fun to play in the
rain. It’s usually quite sunny here so we will need to use our imaginations
again. Imagine big, fat raindrops falling from the ceiling. I think we need to take
out our umbrellas!! Here comes the rain!!

Over The Waves
This week, combined rehearsals started. We had a fantastic day yesterday working on putting things together for our upcoming concert. ALL the students did an EXCELLENT job staying focused and working hard.
I put together a playlist of Prelude Music that will be playing before the concert begins, I picked some of my favorites that relate to our theme, What a Wonderful World.
In Kindergarten today we listened to Sobre las Olas (Over the Waves). We imagined what it would be like to be on a giant ship, sailing over the waves in the ocean. 1st grade and 2nd will hear this piece tomorrow in class.
The students are very excited to be sharing this prelude music with you.
Here is a sneak peak.
Have a great weekend!
