Combined Rehearsal

Today was the start of the combined rehearsals! For the next 4 Wednesdays leading up to the concert, each grade level will be rehearsing together in Ms.Blasi's music room. 90 students in one room is always a challenge. However, today went very well. The students did a wonderful job working hard, staying on task, and singing their little hearts out. Seeing their focus and responsibility today made me so excited for the Spring Concert. I can't wait for you to see the progress they have made since the Fall Concert and the beginning of the school year!  :)

Spring Concert

The Spring Concert is fast approaching.

We have been working hard to learn our concert repertoire. The music that we have been learning is a bit more challenging. Our theme this semester is Music Around the World. Each grade level has specific countries that they will be representing. Kindergarten will be representing Mexico and Puerto Rico while 1st grade is representing China and Japan

The Spring Concert will be held on:

Call time: 5pm (All students should report to their classroom)

The format of the concert is the same. It will be held in the gym. The concert attire is also the same as the fall concert. Here is a reminder.

Spring is Here

Today in 1st grade, we were able to listen to Spring by Vivaldi.

We brainstormed things that remind us of Spring time.
When Vivaldi wrote The Four Seasons, he also composed poems to go along with the music. I had the students listen and draw what they thought Vivaldi was thinking of when he wrote Spring. Next week, I will read the poem and we will listen to the music and hear how the words of the poem portray the music.

We ran out of time to finish our drawings and share today. I told the students they could take their drawings home. If they want to share them in music class next week, they can finish them at home and bring them back to school next Tuesday.
Above is a link to the piece if they would like to listen to it again.

In Kindergarten, we are learning a poem by Beatrix Potter. We will be adding solfege syllables and rhythm to some of the words. The goal is for the students to be able to read simple musical patterns that contain rhythm and solfege syllables together instead of one at a time.

Once I Saw a Little Bird

Once I saw a little bird
Come hop, hop, hop;
So I cried, "Little bird,
Will you stop, stop, stop?"
And was going to the window
To say, "How do you do?
But he shook his little tail,
And away he flew.

March News

March has been quite the busy month for us at Archway Lincoln.

On the 1st, the Symphony of the Southwest came to visit and played Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. We had been studying the instrument families and the instruments of the orchestra in preparation for their visit. We learned about the different instruments that represented the characters in the story. By the time the Symphony came to visit us, we were able to match up the instruments and characters as well as place the instruments in their family. Many of the students were able to identify the instruments by sound too!

We talked about what it meant to be a perfect audience for the performance. The students and I came up with a few guidelines to ensure that the Symphony of the Southwest would enjoy playing for us.

Here are a few that we came up with:

  • Voices are off during the performance
  • Stay seated until the end of the performance
  • Keep your eyes on the musicians, the conductor and the narrator
  • Save your snacks for snack time, not concert time.
  • Make sure you wait until the music stops completely to clap
The students did a great job being a perfect audience during the performance. It was a treat to be able to watch the students faces as they recognized the familiar themes from each character.

Field Day was also a great success. I was able to walk around a bit and watch the students. Thanks to all the parent volunteers who make awesome events like that possible!

I hope your spring break was an enjoyable one!
